Common Storage Mistakes to Avoid

1. Storing Nuts in the Pantry – Nuts contain a high amount of unsaturated fat, which can go rancid quickly when exposed to heat, light, and oxygen. For best results, store your nuts and seeds in the fridge or freezer. This keeps them fresher, more flavorful, and prevents them from turning bitter.

2. Relying Solely on Best-Before Dates – 1

Best-before dates are simply guidelines—not guarantees of freshness. Several factors affect shelf life, including how the product is stored and whether the package has been opened.

Treat nuts like fresh produce. If they smell bitter, harsh, or have a paint-like aroma, they may have gone rancid. When stored properly, they’re likely still good well beyond the best-before date.

You can also extend freshness naturally by adding a bit of rosemary extract—a natural preservative that helps protect against spoilage.
